This verse was revealed about us, the tribe of Banu Salama, "and do not insult one another with nicknames. How wretched is a name of wickedness after faith" [Hujurat 49:11].He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, and there was not a man among us who did not have two or three names. The Prophet ﷺ would call out, 'So-and-so!' and the people would say, 'Stop, Messenger of Allah, he becomes angry at that name.' So this verse was revealed, "and do not insult one another with nicknames."
فينا نزلت هذه الآية في بني سلمة: {ولا تنابزوا بالألقاب بئس الاسم الفسوق بعد الإيمان} [الحجرات: ١١] قال: قدم علينا رسول الله ﷺ له وليس منا رجل إلا وله اسمان أو ثلاثة، فجعل النبي ﷺ يقول: يا فلان فيقولون: مه يا رسول الله، إنه يغضب من هذا الاسم، فأنزلت هذه الآية: {ولا تنابزوا بالألقب}
Reported by Abu Dawud (4962), Tirmidhi (3268), Ibn Majah (3741), Ahmad (18288), and Hakim (4/281-282), all of them through Dawud bin Abu Hind, from Amir Shaybi, who said, "Abu Jubayrah bin Dahhak told me," and he related it. Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." And Hakim said, "Sahih in isnad."
