A boy was born to one of our men, and he named him Qasim. The Ansar said to him, "We will not call you by the kunya Abu al-Qasim, nor will we please your eye with that."So he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, a boy has been born to me and I named him Qasim, but the Ansar said, 'We will not call you Abu al-Qasim, nor will we please your eye with that.'"The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Ansar have done well. Name your children with my name, but do not take my kunya, for I am only a distributor (Qasim)."In another wording he added, "I distribute among you."
Bukhari related it in the Book of the Fifth of Khumus (3115) from Muhammad bin Yusuf, who said, "Sufyan told us, from Amash, from Salim bin Abu Jaad, from Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari," who said, and then he mentioned it. Muslim related it in the Book of Manners (2133:5) through the route of Waki, from Amash, with the same wording, but restricting it to only the raised part of the report, while the additional portion belongs to Bukhari's version. Muslim gave more extensive coverage (2133:3–7) of its various routes and wordings, in some of which he restricted himself to the raised portion, and in others he mentioned the full story, and in some of them it occurs that the Ansari man named his son Muhammad.Bukhari also related it (3114) through various routes from Salim bin Abu Jaad, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he clarified the disagreement over whether the Ansari man intended to name his son Muhammad or Qasim.Ibn Hajar said, "He, meaning Bukhari, indicated a preference for the view that the man intended to name him Qasim, based on the narration of Sufyan, that is Thawri, from Amash, in which he named him Qasim. This is also the stronger view in terms of meaning, because the disapproval from the Ansar toward him only arose from the fact that naming his son this way would necessarily make him known as Abu Qasim."
