The Prophet ﷺ loved to begin with the right side when putting on his sandals, combing his hair, performing ablution, and in all his affairs.
كان النبي ﷺ يعجبه التيمن، في تنعله، وترجله، وطهوره، وفي شأنه كله.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on wudu (168), and Muslim in the chapter on purification (268), both from the hadith of Shubah, who said, Ashath bin Salim informed me, saying, I heard my father, from Masruq, from Ayesha, who said, and then he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar. Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (179) with this same chain, and said, Shubah said, I heard Ashath in Wasit saying, "He loved to start with the right side," and he mentioned his whole practice. Then I heard him in Kufa saying, "He loved to start with the right side as much as he could."I say, the recommendation to start with the right side applies to matters of worship and adornment, but as for what arises from necessity, there is no harm in using the left.
