The Prophet ﷺ forbade eating the food of those who compete with one another in hospitality.
إن النبي ﷺ نهى عن طعام المتباريين أن يؤكل.
Abu Dawud (3754) narrated it, and Hakim (4/128–129) graded it sahih, both from the hadith of Zubayr bin Khurayt, who said, I heard Ikrima say, Ibn Abbas used to say, and then he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih. Hakim said, "Its isnad is sahih." Khattabi said, "The two who compete (al-mutabariyan) are those who vie with each other in their actions. It is said that two men 'tabaraya' when each of them does the same as the other, so as to see which of them will surpass the other. What is disliked about this is the showing off and boasting it involves..." and so on to the end.
