Bukhari related it in the Book of Faith (57), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (56), both from the hadith of Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Qays, from Jareer, and he mentioned it, their wording being identical. Bukhari (7204) and Muslim also related it from Yaqub bin Ibrahim Dawraqi, who said, Hushaym narrated to us, from Sayyar, from Shaybi, from Jareer, who said, "I pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ to hear and obey," and he prompted me to say, "as far as I am able, and to give sincere counsel to every Muslim."In Bukhari (58), by the route of Ziyad bin Alaqa, who said, I heard Jareer bin Abdullah say on the day Mughira bin Shuba died, he stood, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "Hold fast to fearing Allah alone, who has no partner, and to dignity and calm until a governor comes to you, for one is coming to you now." Then he said, "Ask forgiveness for your governor, for he used to love forgiveness." Then he said, "Now then, I came to the Prophet and said, 'I pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.' He stipulated to me, 'Sincere counsel to every Muslim,' so I pledged allegiance to him on this. By the Lord of this masjid, I am indeed sincere in counsel to you." Then he sought forgiveness and stepped down.Mughira had been governor over Kufa during the caliphate of Muawiya, and his death occurred in the year fifty of the Hijrah. At his death he appointed his son Urwa as his deputy, though it is also said that he appointed the aforementioned Jareer as his deputy, which is why Jareer delivered the sermon mentioned.
