Anas said, "I never knew the Prophet ﷺ to eat from a small dish, nor was thin refined bread ever baked for him, nor did he ever eat at a raised table."Qatada was asked, "Then what did they eat on?"He replied, "On leather mats spread on the ground."
ما علمت النبي ﷺ أكل على سكرجة قط، ولا خبز له مرقق قط، ولا أكل على خوان قط، قيل لقتادة: فعلام كانوا يأكلون؟ قال: على السفر.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Foods (5386), from Ali bin Abdullah, who said, Muaz bin Hisham narrated to us, he said, my father narrated to me, from Yunus - who is al-Iskaf - from Qatada, from Anas, and he mentioned it.His saying, "sukurrujah," is an Arabicized Persian word. It is said that it refers to small dishes for eating, and it is also said that it is a bowl with legs like a small table. Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (9/532), "The first explanation is preferable."The reason he did not eat from a sukurrujah is that they used to eat together from large dishes, or the Prophet ﷺ did not have a sukurrujah to eat from.His saying, "ala khiwan" with the kha pronounced with a kasrah, though a dammah is also permissible, is an Arabicized foreign word. It is said that it refers to a table as long as there is no food on it.His saying, "ala as-sufar" is the plural of sufrah, which originally referred to the food prepared for a traveler. It was then used for whatever this food is carried in, and it became well known because food is placed on it, and it is mostly made of leather.
