The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day, or one night, and there he came upon Abu Bakr and Umar. He asked, "What has brought you out of your homes at this hour?"They replied, "Hunger, Messenger of Allah."He said, "And I too. By the One in whose hand is my soul, the same thing that brought you out has brought me out. Come with me."So they went with him until he came to the house of a man from the Ansar, but the man was not at home. When his wife saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said, "Welcome."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Where is so-and-so?"She replied, "He went to fetch us some fresh water."Just then the Ansari man arrived, and he looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two companions, then said, "Praise be to Allah. No one today has more honored guests than I do."He went off and brought them a cluster of dates containing unripe, dried, and ripe dates and said, "Eat from this." Then he took up the knife.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Avoid the milking sheep."So he slaughtered a sheep for them, and they ate from the sheep and from that cluster of dates and drank. When they had eaten and drunk their fill, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and Umar, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely be questioned about these blessings on the Day of Resurrection. Hunger drove you out of your homes, then you did not return until you received these blessings."
خرج رسول الله ﷺ ذات يوم- أو ليلة- فإذا هو بأبي بكر وعمر، فقال: ما أخرجكما من بيوتكما هذه الساعة؟ قالا: الجوع يا رسول الله، قال: وأنا، والذي نفسي بيده، لأخرجني الذي أخرجكما، قوموا، فقاموا معه، فأتى رجلا من الأنصار فإذا هو ليس في بيته، فلما رأته المرأة، قالت: مرحبا وأهلا، فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ: أين فلان؟ قالت: ذهب يستعذب لنا من الماء، إذ جاء الأنصاري، فنظر إلى رسول الله ﷺ وصاحبيه، ثم قال: الحمد لله ما أحد اليوم أكرم أضيافا مني، قال: فانطلق، فجاءهم بعذق فيه بسر وتمر ورطب، فقال: كلوا من هذه، وأخذ المدية، فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: إياك، والحلوب، فذبح لهم، فأكلوا من الشاة ومن ذلك العذق وشربوا، فلما أن شبعوا ورووا، قال رسول الله ﷺ لأبيي بكر، وعمر: والذي نفسي بيده، لتسألن عن هذا النعيم يوم القيامة، أخرجكم من بيوتكم الجوع، ثم لم ترجعوا حتى أصابكم هذا النعيم.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2038) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Khalaf bin Khalifa narrated to us, from Yazid bin Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurairah, who said, and he related it.As for his words, "until they were full," Qurtubi said about this, "This is evidence for the permissibility of eating one's fill from lawful food. What has come indicating disapproval of eating one's fill, from the Prophet ﷺ and from the early generations, applies only to fullness that burdens the stomach, slows a person down from the prayers and remembrances, harms a person through indigestion and the like, and leads a person to arrogance, insolence, sleep, and laziness. This is what is disliked. It may even approach the forbidden if its harms multiply and its afflictions become widespread..." end of quote.As for what was reported from Abu Juhayfa, who said, I belched in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, so he said, "What did you eat, Abu Juhayfa?" I said, Bread and meat. He said, "The people who will hunger longest on the Day of Resurrection are those who ate their fill most in this world." This is daif.Bazzar narrated it (4237), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (22/126), both through the route of Ishaq bin Mansur, who said, Abdul-Salam bin Harb narrated to us, from Abu Raja, from Abu Juhayfa, who said, and he related it. Abu Raja is Mahraz bin Abdullah Jazari, and there is a break in this chain, because Abu Raja did not meet Abu Juhayfa, there was another unknown man between them.Bayhaqi likewise narrated it in Shuab (5254) with his chain, through the route of Abdul-Salam, from Mahraz Abu Raja, from someone who related it to him, from Abu Juhayfa, in similar wording. This is the correct account, because Abu Raja Mahraz bin Abdullah belongs to the seventh generation and could not possibly have met Abu Juhayfa.There are other hadiths on this same subject from a number of companions, but none of them meet the standard of Jami Kamil.
