The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever sleeps with grease on his hand without washing it off, then something harms him, has only himself to blame."
عن النبي ﷺ، قال: من نام، وبيده عمرقبل أن يغسله، فأصابه شيء، فلا يلومن إلا نفسه.
Bukhari reported it in Adab al-Mufrad (1219), and Tabarani in Awsat, Majma Bahrayn (4052), both through the route of Ahmad bin Ishkab, who said, Muhammad bin Fudayl narrated to us, from Layth, from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata, from Ibn Abbas, who said, and then he mentioned it. Layth here is Ibn Abu Salim, who is daif, having been declared daif by Ahmad, Abu Hatim, Abu Zura, and others. However, it is strengthened by what is reported from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba, as a mursal narration. Abdul-Razzaq reported it (19840) from Mamar, from Zuhri, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba, who traced it up to the Prophet ﷺ, and said, and then he mentioned it. This hadith has also been reported from Zuhri in various forms as a connected narration mentioning Ibn Abbas, Ayesha, and Abu Hurairah, and the chains for these were recorded by Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2886), by Tabarani in Awsat, Majma Bahrayn (4052), and by Bayhaqi in Shuab (5427).The sahih version is the mursal one, as reported by Abdul-Razzaq, and this is what Nasai, Daraqutni, and others judged to be the stronger view.As for what Tirmidhi reported (1859) from Ahmad bin Mani, who said, Yaqub bin Walid Madani narrated to us, from Ibn Abu Dhib, from Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, as a marfu narration, "Satan is highly sensitive to smells, so guard yourselves against him. Whoever sleeps at night with the smell of grease still on his hand and something befalls him should blame no one but himself," this is daif. It contains Yaqub bin Walid Azdi Madani, of whom Ahmad said, "He used to fabricate hadith," and Ibn Hibban said, "He fabricates hadith and attributes it to trustworthy narrators. It is not permissible to record his hadith except as a matter of astonishment." The majority of scholars likewise declared him daif, so perhaps the first part of this hadith is his own fabrication.Dhahabi pointed to this in Talkhis Mustadrak, for Hakim also reported it (4/119) through the route of Ahmad bin Mani with his chain, and said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the standard of the two Shaykhs, though they did not record it with this wording." Dhahabi responded to him by saying, "Rather, it is fabricated, for Yaqub bin Walid was accused of lying by Ahmad and by people generally."As for Tirmidhi, he simply said, "This is a gharib hadith from this route," and added, "It has also been reported through the hadith of Suhayl bin Abu Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurairah." He then recorded it through the route of Amash, from Abu Salih, but did not record it through the route of Suhayl bin Abu Salih, which is inconsistent with his usual method.
