A man was eating in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his left hand. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Eat with your right hand."The man replied, "I cannot."The Prophet ﷺ said, "May you never be able to. Nothing prevented him except arrogance."The narrator said, "He never raised it to his mouth again."
أن رجلا أكل عند رسول الله ﷺ بشماله، فقال: كل بيمينك، قال: لا أستطيع، قال: لا استطعت ما منعه إلا الكبر، قال: فما رفعها إلى فيه.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2021), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Zayd bin Hubab told us, from Ikrima bin Ammar, who said, Iyas bin Salama bin Akwa told me that his father told him, and he related it.This man is Bishr bin Rai al-Ir al-Ashjai. This hadith shows that it is permissible to invoke a curse against someone who opposes a ruling of the sacred law out of arrogance and haughtiness. On this subject, it is also reported from Abdullah bin Abu Talha that the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you eats, let him not eat with his left hand, and when he drinks, let him not drink with his left hand, and when he takes something, let him not take it with his left hand, and when he gives something, let him not give it with his left hand."Ahmad narrated it (19420) from Muhammad bin Abu Adi, from Hajjaj, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, who said, Abdullah bin Abu Talha told me that the Prophet ﷺ said, and he related it.Abdullah bin Abu Talha is the maternal brother of Anas bin Malik. Hafiz said in al-Isabah (603), in the second section, his mention is established in the hadith of Anas found in the two Sahihs [Bukhari (5470) and Muslim (2144)], that when Umm Salim gave birth to him, she said, "Anas, take him to the Prophet ﷺ so that he may perform the tahnik for him." So the first thing that entered his stomach was the saliva of the Prophet ﷺ, who performed the tahnik for him with a date, and he began to smack his lips, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "The love of the Ansar for dates."Ibn Saad said, He was born after the Battle of Hunayn, resided in Madinah, and had few hadiths.I say, A group narrated from him, and Ibn Saad and Ajli both deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat. His narrators are trustworthy, but the hadith is mursal, because Abdullah bin Abu Talha belongs to the younger companions who only saw the Prophet without narrating directly from him, having been born after the Battle of Hunayn.Haythami mentioned it in al-Majmu (5/26) and said, Ahmad narrated it, and it is mursal, but its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
