When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bint Jahsh, he invited the people. They ate and then sat on, talking. He began to act as though he were preparing to rise, but they did not get up. When he saw this, he stood, and when he stood, those who were going to leave rose with him, but three men remained behind. The Prophet ﷺ came back to enter, only to find the group still sitting. Then at last they got up and left.The narrator said, "So I came and told the Prophet ﷺ that they had gone. He came and entered, and when I went to enter as well, he let down the curtain between me and himself."Then Allah Almighty revealed, "Believers, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you," up to His words, "that would be a grave matter in the sight of Allah" [Ahzab 33:53].
لما تزوج رسول الله ﷺ زينب بنت جحش دعا الناس، طعموا ثم جلسوا يتحدثون قال: فأخذ كأنه يتهيأ للقيام فلم يقوموا، فلما رأى ذلك قام، فلما قام قام من قام معه من الناس وبقي ثلاثة، وإن النبي ﷺ جاء ليدخل فإذا القوم جلوس، ثم إنهم قاموا فانطلقوا قال: فجئت فأخبرت النبي ﷺ أنهم قد انطلقوا، فجاء حتى دخل، فذهبت أدخل فأرخى الحجاب بيني وبينه، وأنزل الله تعالى: {يأيها الذين آمنوا لا تدخلوا بيوت النبي إلا أن يؤذن لكم} إلى قوله: {إن ذلكم كان عند الله عظيما} [الأحزاب: ٥٣].
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Seeking Permission (6271), and Muslim in the Book of Marriage (1428: 92), both through Mutamir bin Sulayman, who said, "I heard my father mention, from Abu Majliz, from Anas bin Malik," and he related it.
