The Prophet ﷺ was told about my fasting, so he came in to visit me. I placed a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber down for him, but he sat on the ground, and the cushion was left between him and me. Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith.
أن النبي ﷺ ذكر له صومي، فدخل علي، فألقيت له وسادة من أدم، حشوها ليف، فجلس على الأرض، وصارت الوسادة بيني وبينه… فذكر الحديث.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Seeking Permission (6277), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Fasting (159:191), both through chains going back to Khalid bin Abdullah (that is, Tahhan), from Khalid Haddan, from Abu Qilaba, who said, Abu Malih told me, saying, "I entered with your father Zayd upon Abdullah bin Amr, and he narrated to us." He then mentioned the hadith.It contains an indication of honoring one's elders, giving preference to humility and training oneself in it, and the permissibility of declining an honor shown to oneself, provided that this does not cause hurt to the one whose gesture is declined, as stated in Fath al-Bari.
