The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the believing women to give their pledge of allegiance.Asma said, "Messenger of Allah, will you not extend your hand to us?"He replied, "I do not shake hands with women."
دعا رسول الله ﷺ نساء المؤمنين إلى البيعة، فقالت أسماء: يا رسول الله، ألا تحسر لنا يدك؟ قال: إني لا أصافح النساء.
Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it as found in al-Matalib (2109) - and this is his wording - and Ahmad narrated it in abridged form (27594), through two paths, from Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Asma bint Yazid, and she related it.Ibn Hajar said in al-Matalib (9/610), after citing it from the Musnad of Ibn Rahawayh, "Its isnad is hasan." I say, it is as he said, for Shahr's hadith is graded hasan when he does not contradict others and does not bring forth something objectionable, especially when Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram narrates from him. And this is one of those narrations. As for what Hakim narrated in al-Mustadrak (2/486), from Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Sulayman al-Faqih, who said, Ismail bin Ishaq Qadi narrated to us, and the Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Ishaq al-Faqih narrated to us, Abbas bin Fadl Asfati informed us, both of them saying, Ismail bin Abu Uways narrated to us, my brother narrated to me, from Sulayman bin Bilal, from Ibn Ajlan, from his father, from Fatimah bint Utba bin Rabia bin Abd Shams, that Abu Huzaifa bin Utba brought her along with Hind bint Utba to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so she could pledge allegiance to him. She said, "He took a pledge from us and set conditions upon us." She said, "I said to him, 'O cousin, do you know of any of these defects or faults among your people?'" Abu Huzaifa said, "Just be quiet and give him your pledge, for this is how he takes the pledge, and this is the condition he sets." Hind then said, "I will not pledge allegiance to you regarding theft, for I steal from my husband's wealth." So the Prophet withheld his hand, and she withheld her hand, until he sent word to Abu Sufyan, and he granted her leave regarding it. Abu Sufyan said, "As for what is fresh, then yes, but as for what is dried, then no, and no favor either." She said, "So we pledged allegiance to him." Then Fatimah said, "There was no tent more hateful to me than your tent, nor did I wish for Allah to lay it bare along with what was in it, yet by Allah, there is no tent I would love more for Allah to make flourish and bless than your tent." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then also said, "By Allah, none of you believes until I am dearer to him than his child and his father."This is munkar. Hakim said, "Its isnad is sahih." I say, rather its isnad is daif because of Ismail bin Abu Uways. Although he is among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, he was nonetheless careless. Abu Hatim said, "His standing is one of truthfulness, but he was careless." Ibn Main spoke harshly about him. At one point he said, "Truthful but weak in mind, not up to much." At another he said, "Abu Uways and his son are both daif." At a third he said, "Ibn Abu Uways and his father used to steal hadiths." Nasai said, "Daif."So someone in this condition cannot have his statement accepted that "the Prophet withheld his hand, and she withheld her hand," for this contradicts what is well established, that the Prophet ﷺ did not shake hands with women, unless it is understood as extending hands without touching.
