Usama bin Zayd reported,

The Prophet ﷺ once rode a donkey fitted with a saddle covered by a Fadaki blanket, and he seated Usama bin Zayd behind him. He was on his way to visit Saad bin Ubada, who was ill, among the Banu Harith bin Khazraj. This was before the Battle of Badr.He passed by a gathering that included a mixed group of Muslims, idol-worshipping polytheists, and Jews. Among them was Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, and Abdullah bin Rawaha was also present in the gathering.When the dust kicked up by the animal reached the gathering, Abdullah bin Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said, "Do not stir up dust on us."The Prophet ﷺ greeted them, then stopped, dismounted, called them to Allah, and recited the Quran to them.Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul said, "My good man, nothing could be better than this if what you say is true. But do not trouble us with it in our gatherings. Return to your dwelling, and whoever comes to you from among us, recount it to him."Abdullah bin Rawaha said, "Come to us in our gatherings, for we love that."Then the Muslims, polytheists, and Jews began to insult one another until they were on the verge of coming to blows, but the Prophet ﷺ kept calming them down. Then he rode his mount until he entered upon Saad bin Ubada.He said, "Saad, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?" meaning Abdullah bin Ubayy. "He said such and such."Saad replied, "Pardon him, Messenger of Allah, and overlook it. By Allah, Allah has granted you what He has granted you, but the people of this region had agreed to crown him and bind the turban of leadership upon his head. When Allah turned that aside through the truth He gave you, he choked on it, and that is what made him behave as you saw."So the Prophet ﷺ pardoned him.

عن أسامة بن زيد

أن النبي ﷺ الركب حمارا، عليه إكاف تحته قطيفة فدكية، وأردف وراءه أسامة بن زيد، وهو يعود سعد بن عبادة في بني الحارث بن الخزرج، وذلك قبل وقعة بدر، حتى مر في مجلس فيه أخلاط من المسلمين والمشركين عبدة الأوثان واليهود، وفيهم عبد الله بن أبي ابن سلول، وفي المجلس عبد الله بن رواحة، فلما غشيت المجلس عجاجة الدابة، خمر عبد الله بن أبي أنفه بردائه، ثم قال: لا تغبروا علينا، فسلم عليهم النبي ﷺ ثم وقف، فنزل فدعاهم إلى الله، وقرأ عليهم القرآن، فقال عبد الله بن أبي ابن سلول: أيهاالمرء، لا أحسن من هذا إن كان ما تقول حقا، فلا تؤذنا في مجالسنا، وارجع إلى رحلك، فمن جاءك منا فاقصص عليه، قال عبد الله بن رواحة: اغشنا في مجالسنا فإنا نحب ذلك، فاستب المسلمون والمشركون واليهود، حتى هموا أن يتواثبوا، فلم يزل النبي ﷺ يخفضهم، ثم ركب دابته حتى دخل على سعد بن عبادة، فقال: أي سعد، ألم تسمع إلى ما قال أبو حباب- يريد عبد الله بن أبي- قال كذاوكذا قال: اعف عنه يا رسول الله واصفح، فوالله لقد أعطاك الله الذي أعطاك، ولقد اصطلح أهل هذه البحرة على أن يتوجوه، فيعصبونه بالعصابة، فلما رد الله ذلك بالحق الذي أعطاك شرق بذلك، فذلك فعل به ما رأيت، فعفا عنه النبي ﷺ.
