Ayesha said, A group of Jews came in to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Death be upon you." I understood what they meant, so I replied, "And upon you be death and the curse."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Easy, Ayesha. Allah loves gentleness in all matters."I said, "Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I already said, 'And upon you.'"
قالت: دخل رهط من اليهود على رسول الله ﷺ فقالوا: السام عليكم، ففهمتها فقلت: وعليكم السام واللعنة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ مهلا يا عائشة، فإن الله يحب الرفق في الأمر كله فقلت: يا رسول الله، أولم تسمع ما قالوا؟ قال رسول الله ﷺ: فقد قلت: وعليكم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Seeking Permission (6256), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Greetings (2165), both through routes from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and mentioned it as above.In another version with Bukhari (6030), "Did you not hear what I said? I returned it upon them, so it is answered for me against them, while it is not answered for them against me."And with Muslim, she said, "Rather, upon you be death and disgrace."
