Safwan bin Umaya sent him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with milk, a young gazelle, and small cucumbers, while the Prophet ﷺ was in the upper part of Makkah. He said, "I entered without giving the greeting of peace, so he told me, 'Go back and say, Peace be upon you.'" This was after Safwan bin Umaya had embraced Islam.
أن صفوان بن أمية بعثه إلى رسول الله ﷺ بلبن وجداية وضغابيس، والنبي ﷺ بأعلى مكة، فدخلت، ولم أسلم فقال: ارجع فقل: السلام عليكم، وذاك بعد ما أسلم صفوان بن أمية.
Abu Dawud (5176), Tirmidhi (2710), Nasai in al-Kubra (6702), and Ahmad (15425) all narrated it through various routes from Ibn Jurayj, who said, Amr bin Abu Sufyan informed me, that Amr bin Abdullah bin Safwan informed him, that Kaladah bin Hanbal informed him, and he related it.They added at the end, Amr (meaning Ibn Abu Sufyan) said, Umaya bin Safwan also related this hadith to me from Kaladah bin Hanbal, but he did not say, "I heard it from Kaladah."Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Abdullah, whose hadith is hasan.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith. We do not know it except through the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, and Abu Asim also narrated it from Ibn Jurayj in similar fashion."He also said, Dhaghabis is a plant that is eaten. And in al-Nihayah, it is small cucumbers, the singular of which is dhughbus.
