A sheep was slaughtered for him in his household. When he came home, he asked, "Did you send some to our Jewish neighbor? Did you send some to our Jewish neighbor? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Jibreel kept urging me to take care of the neighbor until I thought he would make him an heir.'"
ذبحت له شاة في أهله فلما جاء قال أهديتم لجارنا اليهودي، أهديتم لجارنا اليهودي؟ سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: ما زال جبريل يوصيني بالجار حتى ظننت أنه سيورثه.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (5152), Tirmidhi (1943, this being his wording), and Ahmad (6496), all of them from the hadith of Sufyan, from Bashir bin Ismail, from Mujahid, from Abdullah bin Amr, who mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith from this route, and this hadith has also been narrated from Mujahid, from Ayesha and Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ."I say, its chain of transmission is sahih, and Bashir bin Ismail has been corroborated in his transmission, Dawud bin Shabur corroborated him from Ahmad, and he is also trustworthy. As for the hadith of Mujahid from Ayesha and Abu Hurairah, this divergence attributed to Mujahid does not cause harm, for Mujahid narrated extensively, he narrated from Abdullah bin Amr just as he narrated from Ayesha and Abu Hurairah, and likewise his students narrated from him and differed regarding him, yet all of it is sahih. The term "neighbor" is general, applying to both the Muslim and the non-Muslim.
