A man said, "Messenger of Allah, I have relatives whom I maintain ties with, but they cut me off. I treat them well, but they mistreat me. I am forbearing with them, but they behave foolishly toward me."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "If you are truly as you say, then it is as though you are feeding them hot ashes, and Allah will continue to provide you with a Zaheer against them as long as you remain like that."
أن رجلا قال: يا رسول الله إن لي قرابة أصلهم ويقطعوني، وأحسن إليهم ويسيئون إلي، وأحلم عنهم ويجهلون علي، فقال: لئن كنت كما قلت، فكأنما تسفهم المل ولا يزال معك من الله ظهير عليهم ما دمت على ذلك.
This was narrated by Muslim in Kitab al-Birr wa al-Silah (2558) through several routes from Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shubah narrated to us, saying, I heard Ala bin Abdul-Rahman narrating from his father, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.As for the word "tasuffuhum," it is pronounced with a dammah on the first letter, a kasrah on the sin, and a doubled fa. It is derived from "saffa, yasuffu," meaning "to change," and its meaning here is that it makes their faces take on the color of ash.As for the word "al-mall," it is pronounced with a fatha on the mim, and it means ash.
