A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed a grave sin. Is there any way for me to repent?"The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you have a mother?"The man replied, "No."He asked, "Do you have a maternal aunt?"The man said, "Yes."He said, "Then be devoted to her."
أن رجلا أتى النبي ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله إني أصبت ذنبا عظيما، فهل لي من توبة؟ قال: هل لك من أم؟ قال: لا، قال: هل لك من خالة؟ قال: نعم قال: فبرها.
Tirmidhi (1904), Ahmad (4624), Ibn Hibban (435), and Hakim (4/155) all narrated it via Abu Muawiya, who said, Muhammad bin Suqa told us, from Abu Bakr bin Hafs, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih, except that Tirmidhi criticized it, saying, after narrating it through Sufyan, from Muhammad bin Suqa, from Abu Bakr bin Hafs, from the Prophet ﷺ in similar fashion, without mentioning "from Ibn Umar" in it, "This is more sahih than the hadith of Abu Muawiya." This is what he said.But Abu Muawiya is Muhammad bin Khazim, the blind man of Kufa, who is trustworthy. Nasai and others confirmed his reliability, and he is among the narrators found in all six major collections, so his addition is acceptable. This is why the compilers of the sahih collections, Ibn Hibban and Hakim, included it. Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the criteria of the two sheikhs."The meaning of the hadith is that after you repent to Allah, tend to your maternal aunt with kindness, so that your repentance may be more fully accepted.
