No one was more beloved to them than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet when they saw him, they would not stand up, because they knew how much he disliked that.
ما كان شخص أحب إليهم من رسول الله ﷺ، وكانوا إذا رأوه لم يقوموا لما يعلمون من كراهيته لذلك.
Reported by Tirmidhi (2754), Ahmad (12345), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (946), and Abu Yaala (3784), all of them through various routes from Hammad bin Salama, from Humayd, from Anas, who related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith from this route."As for what was reported from Abu Umama, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us leaning on his staff, so we stood up for him, and he said, "Do not stand as the non-Arabs stand, honoring one another," this is daif. Reported by Abu Dawud (5230), and its chain of transmission is daif. The discussion of this is treated at length in the Book of Knowledge.
