The Prophet ﷺ said while he was on the pulpit, "Show mercy and you will be shown mercy. Forgive and Allah will forgive you. Woe to those who are mere funnels for words. Woe to those who persist, who knowingly continue in what they have done."
عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال وهو على المنبر: ارحموا ترحموا، واغفروا يغفر الله لكم، ويل لأقماع القول، ويل للمصرين الذين يصرون على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون.
Reported by Ahmad (6541), and Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (380), both from the hadith of Hurayz, who said, Habban Shurabi narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Habban, who is Ibn Zayd Shurabi, for at the very least his hadith is hasan.His saying, "funnels of speech" the word "funnels" (aqmaa) is the plural of qamu (with the qaf pronounced with a "u" sound), which is what is placed in the mouth of a vessel when oil or something similar is poured into it, and it retains nothing of what passes through it. Likewise are those who listen to good speech but neither retain it nor act upon it.
