The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is given a gift, let him repay it in kind if he can. If he cannot, let him praise the giver, for whoever praises has shown gratitude, and whoever conceals it has been ungrateful."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من أعطي عطاء فوجد فليجز به، فإن لم يجد فليثن به، فمن أثنى به فقد شكره، ومن كتمه فقد كفره.
Abu Dawud (4813) narrated it from Musaddad, who said, "Bishr told us, Umara bin Ghaziya told me," saying, "A man from my people told me, from Jabir bin Abdullah," who said, and then he related it.Abu Dawud said, "Yahya bin Ayub narrated it from Umara bin Ghaziya, from Shurahbil, from Jabir."This chain, which Abu Dawud mentioned as suspended, was connected by Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (215) from Saeed bin Afir, who said, "Yahya bin Ayub told us, from Umara bin Ghaziya," with the same wording, adding at the end, "and whoever adorns himself with what he has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood."Shurahbil is Ibn Saad al-Madani, who has been criticized, but the hadith has another chain that strengthens it, which is what Ibn Adi narrated in Kamil (1/356) through Ayub bin Suwayd, from Uzai, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, from Jabir, with similar wording.Ayub bin Suwayd is al-Ramli, who is daif in hadith.With the two chains together, the hadith rises to the level of hasan, Allah willing.His statement, "whoever conceals it has denied it," means he has denied that blessing.
