The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that day, "Let the Jews know that there is room for ease in our religion. I have been sent with an upright and tolerant faith."
قال رسول الله ﷺ يومئذ: لتعلم يهود أن في ديننا فسحة، إني أرسلت بحنيفية سمحة.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (24855) from Sulayman bin Dawud (that is, Tayalisi), who said, Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, from his father, who said, Urwa said to me, "Ayesha said..." and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman, who is Ibn Abu Zinad al-Madani, for his hadith is hasan.Humaydi narrated it in his Musnad (254) from Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Hisham bin Urwa narrated to us, from his father, from Ayesha, who said, "Some Abyssinians were playing with their spears, and I was watching from between the ears of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his shoulder, until I was the one who turned away."She said, "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Play on, O Banu Arfada, so that the Jews and Christians may know that there is latitude in our religion.'" Its chain of transmission is sahih.His words, "with a tolerant, true faith," mean a straight, moderate religion, as opposed to the excess of Judaism and Christianity. And his words, "O Banu Arfada," with a fatha on the hamza, a sukun on the ra, and a kasra on the fa, is a title for the Abyssinians. There are other hadiths conveying the same meaning, but they are all defective.
