Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Abu Bakr went out to the masjid in the blazing heat of midday. Umar heard of this and came to him.Umar asked, "Abu Bakr, what has brought you out at this hour?"Abu Bakr replied, "Nothing brought me out except the sharp pangs of hunger I feel."Umar said, "By Allah, nothing brought me out but that same thing."While they were there, the Prophet ﷺ came out to them and asked, "What has brought the two of you out at this hour?"They said, "By Allah, nothing brought us out except the sharp hunger we feel in our stomachs."He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing brought me out but that. Come, get up."So they set off together until they reached the door of Abu Ayub Ansari. Abu Ayub used to set aside food or milk for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but that day the Prophet was late and did not come at his usual time, so Abu Ayub fed it to his family and went off to work among his palm trees.When they reached the door, his wife came out and said, "Welcome to the Prophet of Allah and to those with him."The Prophet of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Where is Abu Ayub?"Abu Ayub, working among his palms, heard him and came running. He said, "Welcome to the Prophet of Allah and to those with him. Prophet of Allah, this is not the hour at which you usually come."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "You are right."Abu Ayub went off and cut down a branch from a palm tree that held every kind of date, dried, ripe, and partly ripe.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why did you do this? Could you not simply have picked some of its dates for us?"He replied, "Prophet of Allah, I wanted you to eat of its dried dates, its ripe dates, and its partly ripe ones. And I will slaughter something for you as well."The Prophet said, "If you slaughter, do not slaughter one that gives milk."So he took a young goat, or a kid, and slaughtered it, and said to his wife, "Bake and knead for us, you know bread better than I do."Then he took the kid, cooked half of it and roasted the other half. When the food was ready, it was set before the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. He took a piece of the kid and placed it in a loaf and said, "Abu Ayub, take this to Fatimah, for she has not tasted anything like it for days."Abu Ayub carried it to Fatimah. When they had eaten their fill, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Bread and meat and dried dates and partly ripe dates and ripe dates," and his eyes filled with tears. He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, this is the blessing you will be asked about. Allah said, 'Then on that Day you will surely be asked about the blessings' [Takathur 102:8]. This is the blessing you will be questioned about on the Day of Resurrection."This weighed heavily on his companions, so he said, "Rather, when you receive something like this and stretch out your hands to it, say, 'In the name of Allah.' And when you have eaten your fill, say, 'Praise be to Allah who has satisfied us, favored us, and given us abundance.' That will be enough to answer for it."When he rose to leave, he said to Abu Ayub, "Come to us tomorrow." For whenever anyone did him a kindness, he liked to repay it. Abu Ayub did not hear this, so Umar told him, "The Prophet ﷺ has ordered you to come to him tomorrow."He came the next day, and the Prophet gave him a young slave girl and said, "Abu Ayub, treat her well, for we have seen nothing but good from her as long as she has been with us."When Abu Ayub brought her home from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "I can find no better way to honor the Messenger of Allah's instruction than to set her free." And he set her free.

عن ابن عباس، قال

خرج أبو بكر بالهاجرة إلى المسجد، فسمع بذلك عمر، فقال: يا أبا بكر، ما أخرجك هذه الساعة؟ قال: ما أخرجني إلا ما أجد من حاق الجوع، قال: وأنا والله ما أخرجني غيره، فبينما هما كذلك، إذ خرج عليهما النبي ﷺ، فقال: ما أخرجكما هذه الساعة؟ قالا: والله ما أخرجنا إلا ما نجد في بطوننا من حاق الجوع، قال: وأنا والذي نفسي بيده ما أخرجني غيره، فقوما. فانطلقوا حتى أتوا باب أبي أيوب الأنصاري، وكان أبو أيوب يدخرلرسول الله ﷺ طعاما أو لبنا، فأبطأ عنه يومئذ، فلم يأت لحينه، فأطعمه لأهله، وانطلق إلى نخله يعمل فيه، فلما انتهوا إلى الباب، خرجت امرأته، فقالت: مرحبا بنبي الله وبمن معه، فقال لها نبي الله ﷺ: فأين أبو أيوب؟ فسمعه وهو يعمل في نخل له، فجاء يشتد، فقال: مرحبا بنبي الله وبمن معه، يا نبي الله، ليس بالحين الذي كنت تجيء فيه، فقال له النبي ﷺ: صدقت قال: فانطلق، فقطع عذقا من النخل فيه من كل التمر والرطب والبسر، فقال النبي ﷺ: ما أردت إلى هذا، ألاجنيت لنا من تمره؟ فقال: يا نبي الله، أحببت أن تأكل من تمره ورطبه وبسره، لأذبحن لك مع هذا قال: إن ذبحت، فلا تذبحن ذات در، فأخذ عناقا أو جديا، فذبحه، وقال لامرأته: اخبزي واعجني لنا وأنت أعلم بالخبز، فأخذ الجدي، فطبخه وشوى نصفه. فلما أدرك الطعام، وضع بين يدي النبي ﷺ وأصحابه، فأخذ من الجدي، فجعله في رغيف، فقال: يا أبا أيوب أبلغ بهذا فاطمة، فإنهالم تصب مثل هذا منذ أيام، فذهب به أبو أيوب إلى فاطمة، فلما أكلوا وشبعوا، قال النبي ﷺ: خبز ولحم وتمر وبسر ورطب ودمعت عيناه، والذي نفسي بيده، إن هذا لهو النعيم الذي تسألون عنه، قال الله جل وعلا: {ثم لتسئلن يومئذ عن النعيم}، فهذا النعيم الذي تسألون عنه يوم القيامة فكبر ذلك على أصحابه، فقال: بل إذا أصبتم مثل هذا، فضربتم بأيديكم، فقولوا: بسم الله، وإذا شبعتم، فقولوا: الحمد لله الذي هوأشبعنا، وأنعم علينا وأفضل، فإن هذا كفاف بها. فلما نهض، قال لأبي أيوب ائتنا غدا، وكان لا يأتي إليه أحدمعروفا إلا أحب أن يجازيه، قال: وأن أبا أيوب لم يسمع ذلك، فقال عمر: إن النبي ﷺ أمرك أن تأتيه غدا، فأتاه من الغد، فأعطاه وليدته، فقال: يا أبا أيوب، استوص بها خيرا، فإنا لم نر إلا خيرا ما دامت عندنا، فلما جاء بها أبو أيوب من عند رسول الله ﷺ قال: لا أجد لوصية رسول الله ﷺ خيرا من أن أعتقها، فأعتقها.
