Abu Jahl asked, "Does Muhammad press his face to the dust in front of you?"He was told, "Yes."So he said, "By Lat and Uzza, if I see him doing that I will tread on his neck, or I will grind his face into the dirt."He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, intending, as he claimed, to tread on his neck. But the next thing they knew, he was backing away on his heels and shielding himself with his hands. He was asked, "What is the matter with you?"He said, "Between him and me there is a trench of fire, and terrors, and wings."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had he come near me, the angels would have snatched him limb from limb."Then Allah revealed, and we do not know whether this was part of Abu Hurairah's report or something else that reached him, "No indeed, man is surely rebellious when he thinks himself self sufficient. Truly to your Lord is the return. Have you seen him who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you considered, if he is upon guidance, or enjoins piety? Have you considered, if he denies and turns away? Does he not know that Allah sees? No indeed, if he does not desist We shall seize him by the forelock, a lying, sinful forelock. So let him call his council, We shall call the guards of Hell. No indeed, do not obey him" [Alaq 96:6–19].Ubaydullah added in his version, "And He commanded him with what He commanded him."Ibn Abdul-Ala added regarding "So let him call his council" that it means his people.
Muslim narrated it in the Description of the Resurrection (2797) through several routes from Mutamir (who is Ibn Sulayman), from his father, who said, Naeem bin Abu Hind narrated to me, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.
