Alqamah said, I traveled to Syria with a group of Abdullah's companions. Abu Darda heard that we had arrived, so he came to us and asked, "Is there anyone among you who recites?"We said, "Yes."He asked, "Which of you recites best?"They pointed to me, and he said, "Recite."So I recited, "By the night as it enshrouds, and the day as it shines forth, and the male and the female" [Layl 92:1–3].He asked, "You heard this from the mouth of your companion?"I said, "Yes."He said, "And I heard it from the mouth of the Prophet ﷺ, yet these people refuse to accept it from us."
دخلت في نفر من أصحاب عبد الله الشام، فسمع بنا أبو الدرداء، فأتانا فقال: أفيكم من يقرأ؟ فقلنا: نعم. قال: فأيكم أقرأ؟ فأشاروا إلي، فقال: اقرأ. فقرأت: {واليل إذا يغشى والنهار إذا تجلى والذكر والأنثى} قال: أنت سمعتها من في صاحبك؟ قلت: نعم. قال: وأنا سمعتها من في النبي ﷺ، وهؤلاء يأبون علينا.
Narrated by Bukhari in the tafsir (4943) and Muslim in the book of the prayer of travelers and shortening it (824), both by the route of Amash, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, who said, then he related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar, but Muslim added, "But these people want me to recite, "By Him who created" [Layl 92:3], and I will not follow them in that."In Bukhari's version (4944) it reads, "These people want me to recite, "By Him who created the male and the female" [Layl 92:3], but by Allah, I will not follow them in that."
