Imran bin Husayn said to me, "Tell me, this work that people do today and toil at, is it something already decreed for them, settled upon them by a destiny that went before, or is it something they meet as they go forward, based on what their Prophet brought them, so that the proof stands against them?"I answered, "No, it is something already decreed for them and settled upon them."He said, "Then would that not be injustice?"I was deeply alarmed by that, and I said, "Everything is Allah's creation and belongs to His hand. He is not questioned about what He does, but they are questioned."He said to me, "May Allah have mercy on you. I only asked you that in order to gauge your understanding. Two men from Mazina came to the Messenger of Allah and said, 'Messenger of Allah, tell us, this work that people do today and toil at, is it something already decreed for them, settled upon them by a destiny that went before, or is it something they meet as they go forward, based on what their Prophet brought them, so that the proof stands against them?'"He replied, 'No, it is something already decreed for them and settled upon them, and the confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah , "And by the soul and He who fashioned it, then inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness" [Shams 91:7–8].'"
Muslim narrated it in Qadr (2650) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim Hanzali, who said, Uthman bin Umar narrated to us, who said, Azra bin Thabit narrated to us, from Yahya bin Aqeel, from Yahya bin Yamar, from Abu Aswad Deeli, who said (he then mentioned it).
