The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept on a straw mat, and when he got up, its marks were visible on his side. We said, "Messenger of Allah, what if we made you a soft bedding?"He replied, "What have I to do with this world? I am in this world only like a rider who took shade under a tree, then moved on and left it behind."
نام رسول الله ﷺ على حصير فقام وقد أثر في جنبه، فقلنا: يا رسول الله لو اتخذنا لك وطاء، فقال: مالي وللدنيا، ما أنا في الدنيا إلا كراكب استظل تحت شجرة ثم راح وتركها.
Tirmidhi (2377), Ibn Majah (4109), and Ahmad (4208) narrated it, and Hakim (4/310) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through various routes from Masudi (that is, Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Utba), from Amr bin Mura, from Ibrahim Nakhai, from Alqama, from Abdullah bin Masud, who said, then he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Masudi, since he became confused in his narrations later in life, but Waki bin Jarra narrated from him, as found in the report of Imam Ahmad, and his narration from him predates that confusion. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith."His statement "a bedding" means a mattress. There are other hadiths on this subject, which are mentioned in the Book of Zuhd.
