I saw Abu Hurayrah recite "When the sky is split asunder" [Inshiqaq 84:1] and prostrate at it. I asked, "Abu Hurayrah, didn't I see you prostrate?"He replied, "Had I not seen the Prophet ﷺ prostrate, I would not have prostrated."
رأيت أبا هريرة قرأ: {إذا السماء أنشقت} فسجد بها، فقلت: يا أبا هريرة، ألم أرك تسجد؟ قال: لو لم أر النبي ﷺ يسجد لم أسجد.
Bukhari related it in the chapter on prostration for the Quran (1074), and Muslim in the chapter on mosques (578), both of them by way of Hisham, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama, who said, and then he recounted it. The wording given is that of Bukhari, while Muslim did not present his own wording for this chain but instead referred back to the hadith preceding it.
