The Prophet ﷺ said to Kaab bin Ujra, "Kaab bin Ujra, fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and prayer is an offering," or he said, "a proof. No flesh nourished by what is unlawful will enter Paradise, for the Fire is more deserving of it. Kaab bin Ujra, people set out in the morning as one of two kinds, one who buys his own soul and frees it, and one who sells his soul and ruins it."
Ahmad (14441), Abdul-Razzaq (20719), and Bazzar - Kashf Astar (1609) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (4514) and Hakim (4/422) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Mamar, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who mentioned it in a long hadith. Its chain is hasan on account of Ibn Khuthaym, who is Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, with the diminutive form, al-Qari al-Makki, for his hadith is hasan.
