Walid bin Mughira came to the Prophet ﷺ at first, and the Prophet recited the Quran to him, and it seemed to soften his heart. News of this reached Abu Jahl, so he came to him and said, "Uncle, your people are thinking of collecting wealth for you."Walid asked, "Why?"Abu Jahl replied, "To give it to you, because you went to Muhammad seeking what he has."Walid said, "Quraysh knows that I am among the wealthiest of them."Abu Jahl said, "Then say something about him that will reach your people, showing that you reject him or that you despise him."Walid said, "And what shall I say? By Allah, there is not a man among you more knowledgeable than I am about poetry, neither about rajaz nor qasidah, nor about the poetry of the jinn. By Allah, what he says does not resemble any of this. By Allah, the words he speaks have a sweetness to them and a charm upon them. Its uppermost branches bear fruit, and its roots are abundantly watered. It rises high and nothing can rise above it, and it crushes whatever is beneath it."Abu Jahl said, "Your people will not be pleased with you until you say something against him."Walid said, "Let me think then."When he had thought, he said, "This is sorcery passed down, which he has learned from someone else."Then this verse was revealed, "Leave Me with the one I created alone" [Muddaththir 74:11].
إن الوليد بن المغيرة جاء إلى النبي ﷺ الاول فقرأ عليه القرآن فكأنه رق له، فبلغ ذلك أبا جهل، فأتاه فقال: ياعم إن قومك يرون أن يجمعوا لك مالا، قال: لم؟ قال: ليعطوكه فإنك أتيت محمدا لتعرض لما قبله قال: قد علمت قريش إني من أكثرها مالا، قال: فقل فيه قولا يبلغ قومك إنك منكر له أو إنك كاره له. قال: وماذا أقول؟ فوالله ما فيكم رجل أعلم بالأشعار مني ولا أعلم برجز ولابقصيدة مني ولا بأشعار الجن، والله ما يشبه الذي يقول شيئا من هذا، ووالله إن لقوله الذي يقول حلاوة وإن عليه لطلاوة، وإنه لمثمر أعلاه، مغدق أسفله، وإنه ليعلو وما يعلى، وإنه ليحطم ما تحته قال: لا يرضى عنك قومك حتى تقول فيه، قال: فدعني حتى أفكر، فلما فكر قال: هذا سحر يؤثر، يأثره عن غيره، فنزلت: {ذرني ومن خلقت وحيدا}

Hakim narrated it (2/506–507), and from him Bayhaqi in Shuab (133), through the route of Ishaq bin Ibrahim, who said, Abdul-Razzaq informed us, from Maamar, from Ayub Sakhtiyani, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. Hakim said, "Sahih in isnad according to the standard of Bukhari."The hadith is also found in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq (3383), from Maamar, from a man, from Ikrima, that Walid bin Mughira came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it. There are two observations about this. First, Maamar did not name his source. Second, Ikrima narrated it as a mursal report, without mentioning Ibn Abbas.This may be due to differences among the narrators from Abdul-Razzaq. Whoever narrated from Ishaq bin Ibrahim, who is Dabari, from Abdul-Razzaq, made Maamar's source "Ayub Sakhtiyani" and also made the hadith connected by mentioning Ibn Abbas. Bayhaqi confirmed this after narrating the hadith, saying, "This is how it was narrated to us as connected, but Hammad bin Zayd narrated it from Ayub, from Ikrima, as mursal."Hafiz bin Kathir also mentioned it in al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah (4/152), from Abdul-Razzaq as connected, except that he made Ishaq to be Ibn Rahawayh. Bayhaqi also mentioned it in Dalail Nubuwwah (2/199–201) through another route, more complete than this one, though its isnad contains some discussion.
