The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon to us when Hasan and Husayn came along, wearing two red shirts, walking and stumbling. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the pulpit, picked them up, and placed them in front of him. Then he said, "Allah has spoken the truth, 'Indeed, your wealth and your children are but a trial' [Taghabun 64:15]. I looked at these two boys walking and stumbling, and I could not bear it until I had interrupted my speech and lifted them up."
Narrated by Abu Dawud (1109), Tirmidhi (3774), Nasai (1413, 1585), and Ibn Majah (3600). Ibn Khuzayma (1456), Ibn Hibban (6039), and Hakim (1/287) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Husayn bin Waqid, who said, Abdullah bin Burayda told me, saying, I heard my father Burayda say, and then he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, we only know it through the narration of Husayn bin Waqid." And it is as he said, for Husayn bin Waqid is hasan al-hadith.
