The Prophet ﷺ spat into his palm, then placed his index finger on it and said, "Allah says, 'How can you outdo Me, son of Adam, when I created you from something like this? Then, when your soul reaches here,'" pointing to his throat, "'you say, "I will give in charity," but when is the time for charity now?'"
Ibn Majah (2707), Ahmad (17842), and Hakim (2/502) all narrated it through routes going back to Hurayz bin Uthman, from Abdul-Rahman bin Maysara, from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Busr bin Hijash Qurashi, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih. Abdul-Rahman bin Maysara Hadrami Himsi was deemed reliable by Ibn Hibban and Ajli, and Abu Dawud said, "The teachers of Hurayz are all reliable." Ibn Hajar also graded it sahih in al-Isabah (644).Hakim added that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse, "So what is the matter with those who disbelieve, that they stare at you with eyes wide open, from the right and from the left, in scattered groups? Does every one of them hope to enter a garden of bliss? No indeed. We created them from what they know" [Maarij 70:36–39], and he said, "Its chain is sahih."
