Abu Jahl said, "If I see Muhammad praying at the Kaabah, I will go to him and stamp on his neck."Ibn Abbas said, "Had he done so, the angels would have seized him in plain sight. If the Jews had wished for death, they would have died and seen their seats in the Fire. And had those who came to engage in mutual imprecation against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gone through with it, they would have returned to find neither family nor wealth."
Ahmad (2226), Abu Yaala (2604, and this is his wording), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2189, in a shortened form) all narrated it through various routes from Ubaydullah bin Amr, from Abdul-Kareem Jazari, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, who said, and then he related it. Its isnad is sahih.Bukhari also narrated it in the tafsir (4958) through another route from Abdul-Kareem, but he confined it to the portion relating to the story of Abu Jahl only. He also narrated it through the route of Ubaydullah from Abdul-Kareem, but did not give the wording in full. These events occurred at different times during the life of the Prophet ﷺ. Some of them took place in Makkah, some took place in Madinah when he ﷺ first arrived there, and some took place near the end of his ﷺ life. Ibn Abbas gathered them all into a single narrative, even though he had not witnessed some of them himself.
