Lina means the palm tree.Regarding "and that He may disgrace the transgressors" [Hashr 59:5], he explained that they brought them down out of their fortresses.He said that they were ordered to cut down the palm trees, and this stirred up misgivings in their hearts. The Muslims said, "We have cut down some and left others standing, so let us ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether there is any reward for us in what we cut down, and whether there is any sin upon us for what we left."So Allah Almighty revealed, "Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing on their roots" [Hashr 59:5], and the rest of the verse.
في قول الله عز وجل: {ما قطعتم من لينة أو تركتموها قايمة على أصولها}
اللينة: النخلة، {وليخزي الفسقين} قال: استزلوهم من حصونهم، قال: أمروا بقطع النخل، فحك في صدورهم، فقال المسلمون: قد قطعنا بعضا وتركنا بعضا، فلنسألن رسول الله ﷺ: هل لنا فيما قطعنا من أجر؟ وهل علينا فيما تركنا من وزر؟ فأنزل الله تعالى: {ما قطعتم من لينة أو تركتموها قائمة على أصولها} الآية.
Tirmidhi (3303) and Nasai in al-Kubra (11510) both narrated it from Hasan bin Muhammad Zafarani, who said, "Affan bin Muslim narrated to us, who said, Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated to us, who said, Habib bin Abu Amra narrated to us, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas," and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.However, Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith. Some of them narrated this hadith from Hafs bin Ghiyath, from Habib bin Abu Amra, from Saeed bin Jubayr, as a mursal report, without mentioning Ibn Abbas in it." He also said, "Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman narrated that to us, from Harun bin Muawiya, from Hafs bin Ghiyath, from Habib bin Abu Amra, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal report. Muhammad bin Ismail heard this hadith from me."
