Some Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "As-samu alayka, Abu Qasim" (death be upon you).He replied, "And upon you."Ayesha said, "I said, 'And upon you be death and disgrace.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ayesha, do not be foul-mouthed."She said, "Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said? They said, 'Death be upon you.'"He replied, "Did I not return to them what they said? I said, 'And upon you.'"Ibn Numayr said, meaning in the hadith of Ayesha, that Allah does not love obscenity or obscene speech.Ibn Numayr added in his version that this verse was then revealed, "And when they come to you, they greet you with that with which Allah does not greet you" [Mujadilah 58:8], to the end of the verse.
Ahmad (25924) narrated it from Abu Muawiya and Ibn Numayr, who both said, Amash told us, from Muslim, from Masruq, from Ayesha, and he related it.Muslim (2165:11) also narrated it, through the route of Abu Muawiya alone, in abridged form, just as he also narrated it from Yaala bin Ubayd, from Amash, with the same wording, and he mentioned in it the reason for the revelation of the noble verse.
