Imam Ahmad narrated it (27067) from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, who said, Kharija bin Harith narrated to me, who said, Salim bin Sarj narrated to me, who said, I heard Umm Subayya al-Juhaniyya... and she mentioned something similar. Its isnad is hasan because of Kharija bin Harith, who is Ibn Rafi bin Mukayth al-Juhani, for he is truthful. This is the most sahih of what has been narrated of this hadith.As for what Abu Dawud (78) and Ibn Majah (382) narrated through the route of Usama bin Zayd, from Salim Abu Numan, that is, Ibn Sarj, from Umm Subayya... she mentioned the hadith, it contains Usama bin Zayd, who is al-Laythi, about whom Nasai said, "He is not strong." However, he was corroborated, and in Taqrib it says, "Truthful but makes mistakes," though he did not make a mistake in this hadith, due to Kharija bin Harith's corroboration of him.Salim bin Sarj is Abu Numan al-Madani, also known as Ibn Kharbudh, with a fatha on the dotted letter followed by a doubled ra, and he is the freed slave of Umm Subayya. Umm Subayya is Khawla bint Qays, the grandmother of Kharija bin Harith. This is what Bukhari said in Adab al-Mufrad (1054), where he narrated the hadith from Ismail bin Abu Uways, who said, Kharija bin Harith narrated to me, except that he did not mention wudu in it, but was content with saying, "My hand and the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mixed together in one vessel." He titled the chapter, "A man eating with his wife."He included in it this hadith, along with the hadith of Ayesha, who said, "I was eating hays with the Prophet ﷺ when Umar passed by, so he called him, and he ate. His hand touched my finger, so he said, 'Ouch! If he were obeyed concerning you, no eye would ever see you.' Then the veil was revealed."Likewise, the Prophet's ﷺ wudu with Umm Subayya took place before the revelation of the veil, and Allah knows best. This hadith will appear later in the Book of Manners.Important note, Umm Subayya was corrupted to "Umm Habiba" in Adab al-Mufrad.
