A foul wind blew during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Some of the hypocrites have been backbiting some of the Muslims, and this wind has been sent because of that."In another narration from him, he said, We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a putrid wind, like the stench of a corpse, arose. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Do you know what this wind is? This is the stench of those who backbite the believers."
هاجت ريح منتنة على عهد رسول الله ﷺ، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إن ناسا من المنافقين اغتابوا أناسا من المسلمين، فبعثت هذه الريح لذلك. وفي رواية عنه: قال: كنا مع النبي ﷺ، فارتفعت ريح جيفة منتنة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أتدرون ما هذه الريح؟ هذه ريح الذين يغتابون المؤمنين.
Abd bin Humayd (1028), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (733), and Kharaiti in Masawi al-Akhlaq (187) all narrated it, all of them through Fudayl bin Iyad, from Sulayman - who is Amash - from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, who related it. Its chain is sahih. Abu Sufyan is Talha bin Nafi, whose hadith is hasan, but what Amash narrated from him is sahih, and this is one of his narrations.As for the second narration, Ahmad (14784) and Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (732) both narrated it through Abdul-Warith bin Saeed, who said, Wasil the freedman of Abu Uyayna narrated to us, who said, Khalid bin Arfata narrated to me, from Talha bin Nafi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, and then he related it. Its chain is hasan on account of Khalid bin Arfata, from whom a number of narrators reported, including Qatada and others, and Ibn Hibban rated him trustworthy. As for the statement of Abu Hatim and Bazzar that he is majhul (unknown), what they mean by this is that he had few narrations. Likewise, it contains Wasil the freedman of Abu Uyayna, whose hadith is hasan.
