The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ten things are from the natural disposition: trimming the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, rinsing water through the nose, clipping the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the underarm hair, shaving the pubic hair, and cleansing with water."Zakariya said, Musab said, "I have forgotten the tenth, unless it is rinsing the mouth."Ibn Qutayba added that Waki said, "Cleansing with water means istinja."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Purification (261), from the hadith of Waki, from Zakariya bin Abu Zaida, from Musab bin Shayba, from Talq bin Habib, from Abdullah bin Zubayr, from Ayesha, who related it as mentioned.I say, this hadith was also transmitted by Ahmad (6/137) and the authors of the Sunan collections, Abu Dawud (53), Tirmidhi (2906), Ibn Majah (293), and Nasai (5040). Nasai, after transmitting the hadith from Ishaq bin Ibrahim, from Waki, with the same wording, then narrated it through the route of Mutamir bin Sulayman Taymi, from his father Sulayman Taymi, who said, "I heard Talq mention ten things from fitrah." He likewise narrated it through the route of Abu Awana, from Abu Bishr Jafar bin Iyas, from Talq bin Habib, who said, "Ten things from the sunnah." He then said, "The hadith of Sulayman Taymi and Jafar bin Iyas is closer to being correct than the hadith of Musab bin Shayba, and Musab bin Shayba's hadith is munkar (rejected)." End of quote.Among those who also commented on this hadith is Daraqutni in al-Ilal (14/89), who preferred the narration of Sulayman Taymi and Jafar bin Iyas over the narration of Musab bin Shayba, saying, "The two of them are more reliable than Musab bin Shayba, and their hadith is more sound." He also reported from Ahmad that he said, "Musab bin Shayba's hadiths contain munkar reports, among them, 'ten things from fitrah.'"Taqi al-Din said in al-Imam, "Muslim did not pay attention to this defect, because in his view Musab is trustworthy, and when a trustworthy narrator connects a hadith, his connected version is given precedence over a disconnected one." See Nasb Raya (1/76).Suyuti added, in his commentary on Sunan Nasai, after quoting Taqi al-Din's statement, "It may be said, in support of Musab's narration, that his precision in distinguishing between what he had memorized clearly and what he was uncertain about is itself a point in favor of his not being careless. Someone who is not suspected of lying, if he shows signs of such precision, has his narration strengthened thereby. Moreover, his narration has a sahih, marfu corroborating report for much of this number, from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, transmitted by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim)." End of quote. As for his mention of "al-baraajim," this is the plural of "burjuma," which refers to the knuckles and all the joints of the fingers.
