It was narrated by Tirmidhi (3253), Ibn Majah (48), and Ahmad (22164), and Hakim (2/447-448) graded it sahih, all of them through various routes from Hajjaj bin Dinar, from Abu Ghalib, from Abu Umama, who said, and then he related it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith. We only know it through the narration of Hajjaj bin Dinar. Hajjaj is trustworthy, close in his hadith, and Abu Ghalib's name is Hazwar."I say, its chain is hasan because of Abu Ghalib, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when it has a basis. The hadiths condemning disputation are numerous and are mentioned in their proper place.Others besides Qatada said that what is meant by it is Isa . They said, "Muhammad claims that everything worshipped besides Allah will be in the Fire, so we are content for our gods to be with Isa, Uzayr, and the angels in the Fire."Allah Most High said, "They did not present it" meaning this example, "to you except for argument", that is, dispute by falsehood. They knew that what was meant by His saying, "Indeed, you and whatever you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell. You will come to it" [Anbiya 21:98], was these idols. This is what most of the exegetes said.
