The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that dogs be killed. Then he said, "What is the matter with them and the dogs?" Afterward he granted a concession for the hunting dog and the sheepdog, and he said, "When a dog laps from a vessel, wash it seven times, and rub it with dust the eighth time."In another narration, he granted a concession for the sheepdog, the hunting dog, and the dog kept to guard crops.
أمر رسول الله ﷺ بقتل الكلاب، ثم قال: ما بالهم وبال الكلاب؟ ثم رخص في كلب الصيد وكلب الغنم، وقال: إذا ولغ الكلب في الإناء فاغسلوه سبع مرات، وعفروه الثامنة في التراب. وفي رواية ورخص في كلب الغنم والصيد والزرع.
Narrated by Muslim in the chapter on Purification (280), via Shubah, from Abu Tayah. He heard Mutarrif bin Abdullah narrating from Ibn Mughaffal, and he mentioned the hadith.His saying "affiruhu" (scour it) comes from al-afr, meaning the surface of the earth, and it is also used to mean dust. "Aafartu al-ina afran" means "I rubbed the vessel with dust."
