Bukhari related it in the Tafsir (4805), from Ibrahim bin Munzir, who said, Muhammad bin Fulayh narrated to us, who said, my father narrated to me, from Hilal bin Ali of Banu Amir bin Luayy, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.We were forbidden from that so that it would not involve any belittling of him, otherwise the Prophet ﷺ is the master of the prophets and messengers, and Allah has favored some of them over others, as He said, "Those messengers, We favored some of them over others" [Baqarah 2:253].His saying, "and We caused a plant of yaqtin to grow over him", the word yaqtin refers to plants without a stalk, such as cucumber and melon, and the gourd is included because it has abundant leaves. His saying, "and We caused to grow over him" means near him, so that he could take shade under its leaves and eat from its fruit, and that was part of the planning of the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.His saying, "and We sent him to a hundred thousand or more" means that the number of Jews among the captives was a hundred thousand, and the rest were Assyrians. It has also been said that they were twenty thousand. When the Prophet ﷺ is sent to a mixed people, his call to worship Allah alone and to abandon shirk and disbelief applies to all of them, because it is not permissible for a prophet to allow people to remain upon the worship of anyone other than Allah."So they believed, and We gave them enjoyment for a time" means that when they saw the signs of the punishment, they believed, even though the divine practice is that when punishment comes, faith no longer benefits anyone, except the people of Yunus, as Allah Most High said, "Then has there been any city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus. When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world and gave them enjoyment for a time" [Yunus 10:98].The reason for this, as the commentators say, is that he left in anger before completing the proof against them, and before Allah had given him permission to migrate. So when they saw the punishment, they turned to Allah in supplication and seeking forgiveness, and Allah accepted their supplication and removed the punishment from them.
