Sahl bin Saad reported,

A woman offered herself in marriage to the Prophet ﷺ. A man said to him, "Messenger of Allah, marry her to me."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What do you have?"The man replied, "I have nothing."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and find something, even if it is only an iron ring."The man went, then returned and said, "By Allah, I found nothing, not even an iron ring. But here is my lower garment, and she may have half of it."Sahl remarked, "He did not even have an upper garment."The Prophet ﷺ said, "What would she do with your lower garment? If you wore it, she would have nothing of it on her, and if she wore it, you would have nothing of it on you."So the man sat down. After he had sat for a long while, he got up to leave. The Prophet ﷺ saw him and called him over, or had him called, and asked him, "How much of the Quran do you know?"The man said, "I know such-and-such surah and such-and-such surah," listing them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have given her to you in marriage for what you know of the Quran."

His saying, "O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to marry her, exclusively for you, not for the believers. We certainly know what We have imposed upon them concerning their wives and those their right hands possess, in order that there will be no discomfort upon you. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful." A woman giving herself without a dowry was exclusive to the Prophet ﷺ, and it is not permissible for a woman to give herself without a dowry to anyone other than the Prophet ﷺ
