A man was speaking in Kindah and said, "On the Day of Resurrection a smoke will come and seize the hearing and the sight of the hypocrites, but it will affect the believer only like a head cold." We were alarmed by this, so I went to Ibn Masud, who was reclining. He became angry and sat up, and said, "Whoever knows something, let him speak, and whoever does not know, let him say, 'Allah knows best.' For it is part of knowledge that a man says of what he does not know, 'I do not know.' Allah said to His Prophet, 'Say, I ask of you no payment for it, nor am I one to pretend what I am not' [Sad 38:86]."Quraysh held back from Islam, so the Prophet ﷺ prayed against them, saying, 'Allah, help me against them with seven years like the seven years of Yusuf.' So a famine seized them until they perished in it and ate carrion and bones, and a man would look at what lay between heaven and earth and see it like smoke."Then Abu Sufyan came to him and said, 'Muhammad, you have come commanding us to maintain family ties, and your own people are perishing. So pray to Allah for them.'"Then he recited, 'So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke' up to His words 'worshippers' [Dukhan 44:10–15]. Ibn Masud then asked, "Will the punishment of the Hereafter ever be lifted from them when it comes?" The relief was granted, and then they returned to their disbelief. That is the meaning of His words, 'The Day We seize them with the greatest seizure, indeed We will take retribution' [Dukhan 44:16], which was the day of Badr. And 'inevitable' [Furqan 25:77] was the day of Badr. And 'Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated' up to 'they will be victorious' [Rum 30:1–3], and the matter of the Romans has already come to pass."
Bukhari related it in tafsir (4774), and Muslim in the description of resurrection (2798), both of them through Mansur and Amash, from Abu Duha Muslim bin Sabih, from Masruq, who said, and then he related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar.
