Ati reported that he rode to Umar bin Khattab to ask him about three matters. He arrived in Medina, and Umar asked him, "What brings you here?"He replied, "I have come to ask you about three matters."Umar said, "What are they?"He said, "Sometimes my wife and I are in a cramped dwelling, and the time for prayer comes. If we pray together, she stands beside me, and if she prays behind me, she has to leave the dwelling."Umar said, "Place a garment as a screen between you and her, then she may pray beside you if you wish.""And what about the two units of prayer after the afternoon prayer?"Umar replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me from them."He said, "And about storytelling, for they have urged me to take up storytelling."Umar said, "Do as you wish," as though he disliked to forbid him.The man said, "I only wanted to abide by your view."Umar said, "I fear for you that you will tell stories and come to see yourself as above your audience, then tell more stories and rise further in your own estimation, until you imagine yourself above them at the height of the Pleiades, and then Allah will place you beneath their feet on the Day of Resurrection by that same measure."
Ahmad (111) reported it from Abu Mughira, who said, Safwan told us, Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr told us, from Harith bin Muawiya Kindi, and he related it.Haythami said, "Harith bin Muawiya Kindi was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban, and more than one narrator transmitted from him, while the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih."I say, its chain is hasan because of Harith bin Muawiya, and the Hafiz said in Tajil Manfaa, "It appears that he was among the mukhadramun."
