Imam Ahmad narrated it (6633) from Zayd bin Hubab, from his book, Abdul-Rahman bin Shurayh told us, I heard Shurahbil bin Yazid Maafiri, that he heard Muhammad bin Hudayya Sadafi say, I heard Abdullah bin Amr bin As say... and he related the hadith.This chain is hasan. Shurahbil bin Yazid, who is Maafiri, was narrated from by a group of scholars. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, Dhahabi affirmed his reliability in al-Kashif, and Hafiz said in al-Taqrib, "Truthful." As for Muhammad bin Hudayya, spelled with a doubled ya, Fasawi affirmed his reliability in his Tarikh (2/528).Muhammad bin Hudayya was also corroborated in this hadith, for Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr corroborated him, narrating it from Amr bin As. Ahmad recorded it (6634) from Hasan, who said, Ibn Lahia told us, Darraj told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr. This chain contains Ibn Lahia, about whom there is some discussion, but this hadith is among the sahih of his narrations. Ibn Batta narrated it in al-Iman (942) through the route of Yunus bin Abdul-Ala Sadafi, from Abdullah bin Wahb, from Ibn Lahia, with the same wording. Ibn Wahb is one of the Abadila who narrated from Ibn Lahia before his condition changed, and their narrations from him are sound.A note. His statement, "Most of the hypocrites of my nation are its Quran reciters." Munawi quoted in Fayd Qadir (2/80) from Zamakhshari, who said, "He meant by hypocrisy ostentation, for each of the two involves presenting outwardly what differs from what is inward."I say, this is the closest explanation given for this hadith, and Allah knows best.
