Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Beginning of Creation (3210), from Muhammad, [who said], Ibn Abu Maryam narrated to us, Layth informed us, Ibn Abu Jafar narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Ayesha, and I quoted it accordingly.His saying, "Muhammad narrated to us," refers to Dhuhli. This is confirmed by the fact that in the tafsir of Surah Kahf, in the isnad of another hadith (4729), it appears as, "Muhammad bin Abdullah narrated to us, Saeed bin Abu Maryam narrated to us." This is also the view of Hakim and Jayyani.However, Ibn Hajar, commenting on the hadith mentioned above in Fath al-Bari (6/309), after citing Jayyani's preference, said, "That is what he said! But Abu Dharr, after relating it, said, 'This Muhammad is Bukhari himself.' This is the more likely view in my opinion, for Ismaili and Abu Nuaym could not find the hadith except through Bukhari's own narration, so they reported it from him. Had it been available from someone other than Bukhari, its route would not have been so restricted for them."I say, this evidence is not sufficient to refute the position of Jayyani and those who share his view, for it may simply be that it was not possible for the two of them to hear it through any route other than Bukhari's. The fact that Muhammad is identified by his full name in the tafsir of Surah Kahf is strong evidence that he is Dhuhli. Moreover, it is not Bukhari's practice in his Sahih to say, "Muhammad narrated to us," while meaning himself.I later came across Hadi Sari (p. 237) and found that Ibn Hajar there said something close to what I have said, so perhaps he retracted what he had said in his commentary.
