Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, who is the best of people?"He replied, "A believer who strives in the path of Allah with his life and his wealth."They asked, "Then who?"He said, "A believer in one of the mountain passes, who fears Allah and spares people from his harm."
Bukhari narrated it in Riqaq (6494), and Muslim in Imarah (1888), both from various routes from Zuhri, from Ata bin Yazid Laythi, from Abu Saeed, and he related it.Muslim also narrated it from the route of Mamar, from Zuhri, with his chain of transmission, and its wording is, "Then a man in one of the mountain passes who worships his Lord and spares people his harm."But Bukhari said, Mamar said, from Zuhri, from Ata, or Ubaydullah, from Abu Saeed, from the Prophet ﷺ. And Yunus, Ibn Musafir, and Yahya bin Saeed said, from Ibn Shihab, from Ata, from some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
