Aisha said, "May Allah have mercy on the women of the first emigrants. When Allah revealed "and to draw their head coverings over their bosoms" [Nur 24:31], they tore up their woolen wraps and made head coverings out of them."Another narration states, "When this verse was revealed, "and to draw their head coverings over their bosoms" [Nur 24:31], they took their waist wrappers and tore them at the edges, then covered their heads with them."
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4758), saying, Ahmad bin Shabib said, my father narrated to us, from Yunus, Ibn Shihab said, from Urwa, from Ayesha, who said, and he mentioned it. This appears on the surface to be a suspended chain, but the majority hold it to be connected, because Ahmad bin Shabib Habati was one of Bukhari's teachers. The second narration in Bukhari, in the tafsir (4759), is from Abu Naeem, Ibrahim bin Nafi narrated to us, from Hasan bin Muslim, from Safiya bint Shayba, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.
