When the Prophet ﷺ was driven out of Mecca, Abu Bakr said, "They have driven out their Prophet. Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. They will surely be destroyed."Then this verse was revealed, "Permission has been granted to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged, and indeed Allah is fully capable of granting them victory" [Hajj 22:39].Abu Bakr said, "I knew then that there would be fighting."Ibn Abbas said, "This is the first verse revealed concerning fighting."
لما أخرج النبي ﷺ من مكة قال أبوبكر: أخرجوا نبيهم، إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون، ليهلكن، فنزلت: {أذن للذين يقتلون بأنهم ظلموا وإن الله على نصرهم لقدير}، فعرفت أنه سيكون قتال. قال ابن عباس: فهي أول آية نزلت في القتال.
Narrated by Nasai (3085), and this is his wording, and Tirmidhi (3171), and Ahmad (1865), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (4710). All of them transmitted it through Ishaq bin Yusuf Azraq, who said, Sufyan told us, from Amash, from Muslim Batin, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith. Several narrators transmitted it from Sufyan, from Amash, from Muslim Batin, from Saeed bin Jubayr, as a mursal report, without mentioning Ibn Abbas." End of quote.I say, as for Sufyan, there is disagreement over his narration, as Tirmidhi indicated. However, Shubah also transmitted it from Amash with the same chain, connected, as found in Hakim (7/3-8), and there is no disagreement over Shubah's narration, and he was a man of scrupulous care and caution. So the chain of transmission is sahih.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs."
