The Prophet ﷺ and his companions used to slaughter the sacrificial camel with its left leg tied up, while it stood on its remaining legs.
أن النبي ﷺ وأصحابه كانوا ينحرون البدنة معقولة اليسرى، قائمة على ما بقي من قوائمها.
Abu Dawud (1767) narrated it from Uthman bin Abu Shayba, who said, Abu Khalid Ahmar reported to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir. Ibn Jurayj said, "Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit informed me," and then he related it.Ibn Jurayj and Abu Zubayr are both mudallis narrators. If we could confirm that Ibn Jurayj stated his source explicitly, we would say the chain meets the standard of Muslim. Ibn Jurayj's statement, "Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit informed me," is a sound (sahih) mursal report, because Ibn Sabit is among the trustworthy Successors, and it strengthens the connected chain.As for the verse, "and when they fall on their sides, eat from them" [Hajj 22:36], this means when the animal falls to the ground, which is a figurative reference to the departure of the soul. It is not permissible to eat from a sacrificial camel once it has been slaughtered until it has died and its movement has stilled. But as long as life remains in it, it is not permissible to cut anything from it or to eat it, as stated in the hadith.
